Textbook Rental Program

Q: How does the rental program work?
It’s easy. Select your textbooks and click the radio button for either New Rental or Used Rental. If you do not see a Rental option it means there is not a rental available for that title. When purchasing your books, if you select the rental option, you will be get a popup with the rental statement that you must agree to before completing your shopping cart. A debit or credit card is required to secure the rental. At the end of the term, you return the book to the bookstore during finals week.
 
Q: Why should I rent from the bookstore versus going to online renters?
You receive competitive pricing , easier rental returns and are assured the correct book based on the order received directly from the instructor. You do not have to wait for the book to be shipped if you wish to use our Pick-Up In-Store Shipping option. You can return the rental in the store in stead of shipping it back.
 
Q: What if I don’t return the book?
If the book is not returned on time, your credit or debit account will be charged accordingly. If we are unable to charge the card, the replacement cost and fees will be sent to collections and future rentals will not be allowed until paid.
 
Q: What if I decide I want to keep the book and use it for future reference?
It is best if  make this descision before the last day for refunds. That way we can credit you the rental fee and you can purchase the book. If you decide to keep the book after the refund date, We can not credit you for the rental. You can bring it back to us at the end of the term or if you decide to keep it, your credit or debit account will be charged the replacement cost and Non-Returned Fee.
 
Q: Why are not all books available for rental in the store?
In order for a rental program to be successful, the textbook needs to be used for multiple terms. We have selected the textbooks which we are assured will be reused next term either on our campus or elsewhere in the country.
 
Q: Is renting the textbook a better deal than purchasing it?
We offer you the option of purchasing the textbook new or used or renting it. It is up to you to decide which option best meets your educational needs. If you plan to use the book for more than one term it may be best to purchase it.
 
Q: Where do I return the book at the end of the term?
To the Portland State Bookstore.
 
Q: What if I drop the class or don’t need the book once the course begins?
Our textbook rental program follows the same last day to refund deadline and policy as purchasing the textbook. Rentals after that date are “rented” and refunds will not be given for the original rental fee. You still must return the book to avoid the end of term Non-Returned Book fees.
 
Q: Why do you need a credit or debit card now? Is it charged when I pick up the book?
The only charge associated with renting the textbook is the rental fee. Your card is not charged for any additional fees unless the book is not returned. We require you to use a credit or debit card to ensure that the textbook is returned.
